It’s unclear what Aaron Rodgers will be doing when the upcoming NFL season kicks off, but if he decides to come back for another year, the Steelers currently seem like the frontrunners to land him. There’s been no shortage of rumors concerning that possibility—including one that a country club just outside of Pittsburgh had to address after it gained traction.
At this point, Aaron Rodgers doesn’t have much left to prove after capping off his 20th NFL season with the Jets last season during an ill-fated stint in New York that came to an end upon the conclusion of the 5-12 campaign defined by a ton of drama behind the scenes courtesy of owner Woody Johnson.
No one would blame the 41-year-old for hanging up his cleats and bringing an end to a Hall of Fame career where he won a Super Bowl, was named to the Pro Bowl ten times, and earned Most Valuable Players honors on four occasions, but it appears the quarterback is still opening to returning with what would be his third NFL team.
The Steelers were viewed as Rodgers’ top suitor ahead of the NFL Draft (an event he reportedly wanted to see transpire before making any decisions about his future), and that remained the case after the franchise scooped up Will Howard in the sixth round to flesh out a fairly underwhelming depth chart that also includes Mason Rudolph and Skylar Thompson.
On Saturday, things took an interesting turn when Andrew Fillipponi of Pittsburgh sports talk radio station 9.37 The Fan asserted Rodgers had become the newest member of Nevillewood Country Club, a Jack Nicklaus-designed course located in the Pittsburgh suburb of Presco with an invite-only initiation fee of $45,000.
It seemed like a smoking gun when you consider it’s hard to imagine Rodgers would join a country club outside of Pittsburgh if he wasn’t signing with the Steelers, but Rich Walsh of KDKA poured some cold water on the rumor after reaching out to its president, who denied the QB has joined Nevillewood while adding he’d have no trouble joining its ranks if he does end up in The Steel City.
This rumor is NOT true. I just spoke with the Club at Nevillewood President Wayne Chiurazzi, who said Aaron Rodgers did not join. The Club would love to have him if he does sign with the Steelers. It is true that Nevillewood is a beautiful Pittsburgh suburban golf course. https://t.co/8gMc8IN5OU

Derek Carr’s sudden decision to retire over the weekend threw an interesting twist into the situation when you consider the Saints may also be open to adding a veteran QB, but we’ll have to wait and see how the chips fall as we await a decision that will likely come within the next couple of weeks.
