Philip Rivers came back for three games, and it might lead to something much bigger.
To end the year, Rivers gave an emotional press conference following the final game of his career. The Indianapolis Colts quarterback went 0-3 on the field, but it had little to do with his gameplay. His being on the couch for five years and coming back to play at this level was remarkable. Now, teams want to pick his brain.
NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported on Sunday that Rivers could receive head coach interest in the 2026 coaching cycle. Rapoport said Philip Rivers was in contention for the Tennessee Titans’ head coaching job.
The New York Giants and the Tennessee Titans are the two teams most likely to have vacancies open this week. Several franchises did research on Rivers as a coach last year. However, the quarterback reportedly did not show much interest in the opportunity.
He has been coaching for years, but at the high school level.
Indianapolis Colts quarterback Philip Rivers is likely done playing in the NFL for the second time. However, he might not be done with the NFL altogether. Multiple NFL teams “have been doing research” on Rivers regarding him being a head coach.
Rivers has been the head coach at St. Michael Catholic High School in Alabama since 2021. It is up to him to return there or make a huge step up. All head coaches have had to go through high school and then to college before heading to the NFL. It appears that Rivers will skip one step altogether.
Philip Rivers threw for 544 yards, four touchdowns, and three interceptions in his three-game stint with the Colts this season. That is insanely impressive for a 44-year-old. Many teams would love to have his brain on their sidelines.
There are numerous former NFL players who have become head coaches in the league. Perhaps Rivers is next.
