The Philadelphia Eagles trigged an usual NFL rule with its unstoppable Brotherly Shove, aka Tush Push, against Frankie Luvu and the Washington Commanders on Sunday. Officials almost ruled a touchdown in favor of the home team even though it never actually scored a touchdown by crossing the goal line.
Kevin Burkhardt joked that it was the longest second down in league history!
If you have been living under a rock, the ‘Tush Push’ is a form of quarterback sneak that has a much higher success rate than the traditional quarterback sneak. A running back (or multiple running backs) line up behind the quarterback to give him an extra push, on his tush, from behind. The Philadelphia Eagles are successful on more than 85% of their quarterback sneaks while the rest of the NFL hovers around 75%.
Opposing defenses do not have an answer for Jalen Hurts and the Birds. They try to go head-on with the biggest offensive line in the league. They try to jump over. Trying to go under the pile would defeat the purpose. There is not enough time to go around.
Philadelphia lined up for 1st-and-goal at the two-yard-line with 13 minutes and 34 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter of the NFC Championship on Sunday. The Eagles held an 11-point lead over the Washington Commanders at the time.
It took five tries to punch it in the end zone!
Here is Luvu’s first attempt:
