The Philadelphia Eagles still hold the lead and inside track to winning the NFC East for the second year in a row. But the defending Super Bowl champions are reeling a bit after back-to-back losses to the Dallas Cowboys and Chicago Bears.
Following the Super Bowl victory, Eagles fans were angered by the perceived lack of respect given to quarterback Jalen Hurts. Several pundits and former players said that Hurts was merely a product of an overpowered roster around him.
Eagles coach Nick Sirianni, however, stepped in to defend his quarterback.
Sirianni stopped short of calling Hurts an elite quarterback. But he did point out that football is a team game, and that Hurts is a big part of Philadelphia’s team.
“I think that’s bulls—,” Sirianni said. “I mean, he plays the most important position in all of sports. And it’s the most ultimate team game there is. And what I admire about him is his selflessness of doing anything we need to do to win.
“One of the reasons I love football so much is that it takes everybody to accomplish your goals,” he continued. “You can go ahead and start naming great quarterbacks, I’ll tell you their great receivers and their great defenses.”
Unfortunately for Sirianni and Hurts, the Eagles’ offense has sputtered this season.
Philadelphia ranks just 24th in yards per game (304.8) and 19th in points per game (22.5) this season. Things get even worse when the Eagles have to lean on Hurts.
Philadelphia has asked Hurts to throw the ball 30-plus times in five games this season. The Eagles are just 1-4 in those games. Conversely, they are 7-0 in games when Hurts throws fewer than 30 times.
Now, yes, teams often throw the ball more when trailing. But it also shows that Hurts struggles the carry the Philadelphia offense when needed. And considering he has two star wide receivers, a very good tight end, and an elite receiver out of the backfield, it’s not the best look for the Eagles’ signal caller.
