It was recently reported by Celtics Wire that the Boston Basketball Partners, the group that owns the Boston Celtics, plans to sell 51% of the team this year and to unload the additional 49% of the franchise in 2028. According to Bill Simmons, Philadelphia Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie is in the running to purchase the Celtics.
Any potential owner of the Boston Celtics would have to be approved by the league’s Board of Governors and it would seem that Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie would check many of the boxes they would be looking for in a potential owner to bring into the fold. For starters, he already owns one of the most popular NFL franchises in the Philadelphia Eagles and has a team headed to the Super Bowl.
Additionally, as Bill Simmons pointed out on X (née Twitter), Jeffrey Lurie holds three degrees from universities in the area (Clark, Brandeis, and Boston University), is a Boston native, and Lurie’s first major company was named Chestnut Hill Productions. So it’s not as if an ‘outsider’ would be taking over the Boston franchise.

According to Bill Simmons’ latest podcast, the first round of potential buyers of the Boston Celtics was narrowed down to just 5 potential buyers. So Jeffrey Lurie would represent just 1 of those 5 potential buyers.

Simmons points out that there is precedent for NBA-NFL owners with Josh Harris owning the Sixer and buying the Commanders, and the Kroenke family owning the Nuggets and the Rams. Bill Simmons went on to say he’s always believed the Philadelphia Eagles to be one of the best run teams in the NFL. Adding “if he bought the Celtics, that’s a decent outcome.”
Given that billionaire Jeffrey Lurie will be focused on the Super Bowl for the next two weeks it will be interesting to see how things progress on the Boston Celtics sales side. And if they will be looking for him to be laser focused on the sale at this busy time for him.
