Philadelphia Eagles fans who plan to attend the NFL season-opener on Sept. 4 must be prepared for a truly horrendous transit experience on the backend. Win or lose, SEPTA cuts will create a disastrous situation for the mass exodus from Lincoln Financial Field.

Good luck trying to get home!

This unfortunate reality has nothing to do with the NFL or its Philly-based franchise. However, the city is already preparing to put its constituents in a tough spot on one of the best days of the year and we are still more than two weeks away.

The 2025 NFL season starts in Philadelphia.

As the reigning Super Bowl champions, the Philadelphia Eagles will play the first regular season game of the 2025 National Football League season. They will host the Dallas Cowboys.

The game is currently scheduled to be played at 8:20 p.m. ET on Thursday, Sept. 4. It will air live on NBC.

Speaking on recent history, the average NFL game lasts approximately three hours and 12 minutes— including commercials, stoppages, etc. That leaves us with a projected end time of 11:32 p.m. for the first game of the season.

Fans who live within walking distance of the stadium will be home around midnight. Fans who choose to drive to the game and get out ahead of traffic will also be at a huge advantage.

Everybody else is going to be there awhile. It is going to be a disaster.

Eagles fans will not have SEPTA to save them.

Lincoln Financial Field is located at the southernmost point of Philadelphia along the Delaware River. If you were to cross the river, you would be in New Jersey.

The majority of the city (including the Liberty Bell and Pat’s King of Steaks) is located no less than two miles north of where the Eagles play on Sundays — and, in this case, Thursday. The same can be said for the majority of housing. There is not a lot of anything near the Linc.

Therein lies the issue. More than 65,000 people will try to leave the stadium at the same time and most of them cannot easily walk to where they are going.

SEPTA, the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority, typically runs 10 additional trains out of the Lincoln Financial Field station to accommodate 14-17,000 fans who leave the stadium within the first hour. Budget cuts will drop that number from 10 additional trains to just four on Sept. 4.

“The opener on September 4th, just to put it bluntly, will be chaotic,” warned SEPTA General Manager Scott Sauer.

If you have ever been to an Eagles game, you know exactly what this means. It is already a challenge to catch an Uber or taxi home— especially when the crowd gathers outside the subway station. Now add an additional 8,000 people to that mad rush. Yikes.
