Statistically speaking, the odds of being a white dude in the NFL are not all that high these days. According to league data, just 24.4 percent of players in 2023 were white dudes. Those odds go down even more when you play a position like, say, defensive back.
Unless, of course, you play for the Philadelphia Eagles where starting safety Reed Blankenship and starting nickel corner Cooper DeJean combined to form a partnership that fans affectionately referred to as the “Exciting Whites.”
Blankenship had been a standout on the Eagles defense for multiple years. While DeJean, a second-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, cemented his name is team history with a pick-six of Patrick Mahomes in Super Bowl LIX. But even despite their stardom and success, it appears Eagles fans still can’t quite tell one white defensive back from another.

During Friday’s Super Bowl parade, Eagles fans chanted “Cooooop” in hopes of getting DeJean’s attention on one of the open-top busses. There was, however, one problem. DeJean wasn’t on the bus. Instead, they were chanting at Blankenship, which the safety politely pointed out.
Now, given all the other videos out there, it’s likely that neither Blankenship nor DeJean were sober enough to care or even really know who or where they were. But it’s pretty funny nonetheless.
DeJean became the first white starting cornerback in the NFL since Jason Seahorn in 2004, which ESPN’s Dominique Foxworth considered a bit absurd.
“It’s ridiculous to think of white men as an oppressed minority, but it’s equally ridiculous to think that there hasn’t been one white kid who could play corner,” Foxworth said prior to the NFL Draft.
“It doesn’t really bother me too much,” DeJean said at the NFL combine. “I’m just going to go out and be myself. Just go out and play my game.”
As it turns out, his game is very, very good. But not quite good enough to distinguish himself from the other white DB on his team.
