PFF Thinks Steelers Need to Target Alabama Star QB in Draft

With the Pittsburgh Steelers stuck in quarterback purgatory, Pro Football Focus thinks Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe is one prospect that the team needs to target in the 2025 NFL Draft. This year’s quarterback class isn’t considered strong, but Milroe could be an intriguing player for the Steelers.

According to Andrew Fillipponi of 93.7 The Fan, there are Steelers scouts who “love” Milroe. The scouts believe he’s a first-round talent and a potential franchise quarterback.

“Both Russell Wilson and Justin Fields are free agents this offseason and even if they bring either of them back, they are still in the market for a quarterback to develop. Milroe’s hype has fallen some, but he earned PFF grades above 87.0 in each of the past two seasons,” Gordon McGuinness of PFF wrote.

ESPN draft analyst Matt Miller had the Steelers selecting Milroe in the first round in his way-too-early mock draft in late November.

“The Steelers’ future at quarterback is a big question heading into the offseason, as both Russell Wilson and Justin Fields are set to be free agents. Either could return, but the Steelers might be searching for more of a long-term option,” Miller wrote. “Milroe has a combination of Wilson’s arm strength and pocket mobility and Fields’ rushing ability. He’s still a bit raw as a prospect, but he has 15 touchdown passes and rushed for 17 more scores this season. Milroe just needs to improve his touch as a passer, but scouts I’ve talked to said he has the most upside of any draft-eligible quarterback in the class. And should the Steelers sign Wilson, Milroe could sit, learn and develop further.”

Wilson reiterated on the Pat McAfee Show last week that he wants to retire as a Steeler, but his status with the team seems very uncertain. It seems more likely that they’ll run it back with Justin Fields.

Steelers’ scouts were at the Alabama-LSU game on Nov. 9. In addition to Milroe, the game also featured top 2025 NFL Draft quarterback prospect Garrett Nussmeier of LSU. The Steelers had previously scouted Alabama against Wisconsin in Week 3. Getting a good look at Nussmeier means the Steelers have scouted in-person all of the top seven quarterbacks in the 2025 NFL Draft class, per the NFL Mock Draft Database big board.
