Jalen Hurts has been the starting quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles for four seasons and has led the Birds to the Super Bowl in two of them, making him one of the most popular players in the league. And as Hurts has become more famous, the sports world has become more familiar with his personality, particularly the way he sometimes speaks in quotes.

The Philadelphia Eagles QB’s penchant for speaking in colloquialisms has become so well known, in fact, that memes and compilation videos have hit the internet mocking this now-notorious habit of his.

“Jalen Hurts about to get on the podium and start talking about ‘Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.’ F— outta here bum,” a viral tweet from December 2023 that encapsulates this idea joked.

Eagles players and coaches: “Jalen please! We need you to throw downfield! We’re begging you!”

Jalen Hurts: “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate, Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.”

In a recent piece from The Athletic, former college teammates of Hurts’ explained that he’s been talking this way since college. According to writer Elise Devlin, for example, Hurts — then the quarterback at the University of Oklahoma — once took a throw-away motivational anecdote about boiling a coffee bean to heart.

“When Jalen Hurts was the quarterback at Oklahoma, author Damon West spoke to the football team. West’s speech revolved around a carrot, an egg and a coffee bean. He explained that when you put all three in boiling water, the carrot softens and the egg hardens, but the coffee bean spreads to the rest of the water, getting stronger and impacting what’s around it.”

“It was just Jalen,” Caleb King-Kelly, Hurts’ teammate at Oklahoma, said. “Like, sure, it’s a good story, but Jalen? Dude was like, ‘I’m keeping that forever!’ These Jalen-isms, he’s always been this way.”

Patrick Fields, another former teammate of Hurts’ at Oklahoma, backed King-Kelly up, confirming that Hurts’ frequent use of motivational quotes is “just the way he talks.

“It’s just the way he talks. But even deeper than that, it’s more so the way he looks at life. I think it philosophically shapes the way he does everything,” Fields said.

Heading into Super Bowl LIX, Hurts and the NFC champion Philadelphia Eagles are two-point underdogs against Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs, who are seeking a third-straight Super Bowl title. To overcome the dynastic Chiefs, Hurts may need to find some new motivational quotes to regurgitate.
