New England Patriots running backs Rhamondre Stevenson and Antonio Gibson combined for three fumbles in Sunday’s loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, indicating it may be time for rookie running back TreVeyon Henderson to receive more opportunities.
However, Boston Sports Journal’s Greg A. Bedard doesn’t think Henderson has shown enough through the first three games to warrant more playing time.
“What have people seen so far that makes them think that TreVeyon Henderson needs the ball more?” Bedard said Tuesday, via Patriots on CLNS. “To this point, Henderson has not shown one thing on the field where you’re like, we need to play that guy more.”
Henderson hasn’t shown anything in the running game yet this season; he has carried the ball only 19 times for 65 yards.
The Patriots need to reconsider giving Steveson and Gibson the ball if they continue to turn it over. While Henderson may not be at his best yet, he does excel at securing the football.
Henderson displayed excellent ball security throughout his four years at Ohio State, never losing a fumble. For New England, prioritizing ball security is essential, as its offense lacks the explosiveness to handle multiple turnovers while still achieving a high scoring rate.
