New England Patriots wide receiver Stefon Diggs is facing charges of felony strangulation or suffocation and misdemeanor assault and battery charges, according to legal filings.
Court documents show the criminal charges resulted from an incident on Tuesday, Dec. 2, the day after the Patriots Monday Night Football win over the New York Giants prior to the team’s bye week.
Details of the allegations were not shared in court, where Diggs’ attorneys appeared on Tuesday.
Diggs’s arraignment is now schedule for Friday, Jan. 23, two days before the scheduled date of the AFC Championship game.
The Patriots released the following statement:
“The New England Patriots are aware of the accusations that have been made regarding Stefon Diggs. Stefon has informed the organization that he categorically denies the allegations. We support Stefon. We will continue to gather information and will cooperate fully with the appropriate authorities and the NFL as necessary. Out of respect for all parties involved, and given that this is an ongoing legal matter, we will have no further comment at this time.”
New England signed Diggs to a three-year contract worth up to $69 million back in March. His arrival has helped sparked a massive turnaround for the Patriots, who clinched the AFC East on Sunday, as Diggs leads the team with 82 catches for 970 yards to go with four touchdowns.
