New England Patriots wide receiver Ja’Lynn Polk was missing at the start of practice on Thursday, marking his second straight absence to open the team’s training camp.

Now, further details are beginning to emerge about Polk’s injury that’s caused his absences.

“WR Ja’Lynn Polk, the 2024 second-round pick who faces a battle for a roster spot, is not present for the start of practice,” ESPN’s Mike Reiss posted on Bluesky. “Some context: I’m told Polk passed his initial physical, then later had what is considered minor muscle tightness, so playing it cautious early.”

Andrew Callahan of the Boston Herald further reported that Polk was “dealing with a soft tissue issue,” according to colleague Doug Kyed.

The 23-year-old wideout had offseason shoulder surgery, but it’s unclear if this is related.

Polk sported a yellow jersey during spring workouts, indicating he was participating in a limited capacity while working his way back from injury.

The former 37th overall pick finished his rookie season with just 12 receptions for 87 yards and two touchdowns on 33 targets across 15 games (seven starts).

With the likes of newcomers Stefon Diggs, Mack Hollins and Kyle Williams, as well as returners DeMario Douglas, Kendrick Bourne and Kayshon Boutte, Polk’s roster spot is far from guaranteed. After back-to-back absences to open training camp, things aren’t off to a great start.
