Drake Maye has plenty of support in the New England Patriots locker room after Sunday’s strong showing.
Maye led New England to a 33-27 win over the Miami Dolphins by completing 19 of 23 passes for 230 yards and two touchdowns. The second-year quarterback posted the best QBR (77.6) of his NFL career and added a rushing touchdown for good measure on the road.
Patriots teammates praised Maye after the Week 2 victory, courtesy of MassLive’s Mark Daniels. Offensive lineman Morgan Moses, who joined the organization for his 12th NFL season, celebrated the 23-year-old for taking ownership of the team.
“You’ve got a guy, and he’s looking and calling the plays. You’re looking at him in his eyes and he’s speaking with confidence and enthusiasm,” Moses said. “You know plays are going to work. That’s who he is. He’s a leader. He’s our quarterback, man. He played a hell of a game.”
Christian Barmore collected five tackles in Sunday’s win. New England’s fifth-year defensive tackle marveled over Maye’s presence on and off the field.
“Oh man, Drake’s a hell of a player. A dog. I love playing for him,” Barmore added. “He puts fire into us. Especially how he makes big plays, how he runs, excitement… I love playing for a guy like that.”
Maye’s new wide receiver, Stefon Diggs, also praised the young quarterback for “growing up” and making a “jump” in New England’s second game. Last year’s No. 3 pick began the season by amassing 287 passing yards on 46 attempts in a 20-13 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders.
Maye will have another opportunity to dazzle his Patriots teammates when leading them into a Week 3 conference matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
