The New England Patriots saw practice execution become game reality during their victory over the New York Jets on Thursday.
TreVeyon Henderson was initially stopped short on his seven-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, but eventually found paydirt with the help of a rather motivated cavalry — including Hunter Henry, Garrett Bradbury, Will Campbell, Jared Wilson, Mike Onwenu.
Mike Vrabel wouldn’t have let them hear the end of it, had they not chipped in.
“Pushing the piles — he’s big on us being around the ball, not watching, and getting downfield and making sure our guys are safe and keeping them covered up,” Onwenu said, according to ESPN’s Mike Reiss.
“A pile push is what Vrabes lives for,” wide receiver Mack Hollins said.
Vrabel is so intent on instilling that mentality, that he even introduced a drill that promotes it during practices.
No, we have no idea what that would look like, either.
The Patriots have found a way to make it work, however, and continue to showcase an outstanding ability to take what they’ve been taught and apply it in game situations — which is all you can ask for as a head coach.
