Patriots training camp primer: Day 3 practice preview, schedule, more
Pats Pulpit Pats Pulpit

For a third day in a row, the New England Patriots will hit the practice fields on Monday. That’s right, it’s time for training camp session No. 3 this summer — one that will tone the intensity down a bit compared to the last two days: the expectation is that it will be a walkthrough rather than a fully-competitive session.

Nonetheless, there will still be plenty of action in Foxborough. Welcome to Day 3.

Schedule

As usual, the Patriots’ third training camp practice of the summer will take place on the fields behind Gillette Stadium. The session is free and open for the general public to attend.

  • 9:15 a.m. ET: Gates open
  • 9:30 a.m. ET: Mike Vrabel press conference
  • 10 a.m. ET: Practice (walkthrough)
  • ca. 12 p.m. ET: Player availability (WR A.J. Brown, WR DeMario Douglas, OT Morgan Moses, ED Bradyn Swinson, S Craig Woodson, K Andy Borregales)

As always, of course, the schedule is tentative and subject to change. For more information, please visit our Pats Pulpit Training Camp Guide.

Story of the day

What will the depth chart look like? With a walkthrough scheduled for Monday, the Patriots will tone down the intensity and focus more on position groupings and mental work than physical competition. This, in turn, will give us a chance to see how those groups currently stack up on both sides of the ball. The first two days of practice might have earned some players a higher number of quality reps.

Injuries to monitor

NFI: RB Terrell Jennings, S Brenden Schooler

PUP: TE C.J. Dippre, ED Harold Landry III, ED Gabe Jacas

TBD: FB Reggie Gilliam

The Patriots’ physically unable to perform list saw an addition on Sunday. Second-round draft pick Gabe Jacas, who had signed his rookie contract earlier that day, was sent there to start his rookie training camp. Like the rest of the other players on that or the non-football injury/illness list, he can be activated and stat practicing at any point without any lead-up.

Meanwhile, fullback Reggie Gilliam was nowhere to be seen on Sunday.

Players to watch

With the Patriots running a walkthrough, we will be looking mostly on depth charts and packages rather than who performs at a certain level. With that said, here are our player to watch.

RB Jam Miller: Even though Lan Larison lined up as the third running back up on Sunday, Miller had the more impressive moments as a rotational RB4; he had multiple long runs while working with the second and third units. The competition at the position will become more intense as soon as full pads are introduced to the mix later this week, but the seventh-round rookie appears to keep building a strong foundation beforehand.

TE Tanner Arkin: The undrafted free agent might be the frontrunner to earn the No. 3 tight end spot behind Hunter Henry and Eli Raridon. A blocker first, he saw reps with the first-team offense on Sunday and...
