The New England Patriots added a new name to their quarterback mix Wednesday when they claimed Tommy DeVito on waivers.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter was first to report the transaction.
DeVito hit the market one day earlier after the New York Giants cut him as part of their roster trim-down. His release followed the organization’s offseason moves at the position, with Russell Wilson, Jameis Winston and rookie Jaxson Dart all earning roster spots ahead of him.
Giants coach Brian Daboll praised DeVito’s effort during camp and preseason but said roster construction made it impossible to keep four quarterbacks, according to the Associated Press.
The former undrafted free agent put together an efficient preseason showing before being let go. He completed 30 of 38 attempts for 323 yards with four touchdowns and one interception.
Asked about his outlook, DeVito admitted he approached each game knowing it could be his last, a mindset shaped by injuries and fluctuating roles throughout his career.
The northern New Jersey native broke into the league with the Giants in 2023 after college stints at Syracuse and Illinois.
He went on to start eight of his 12 appearances that fall, finishing with 1,358 passing yards, eight touchdowns and three interceptions. He has a career completion rate just above 65 percent and owns a 3-5 record as a starter.
Now in New England, DeVito provides additional depth for a team still shaping its quarterback chart. His arrival gives the Patriots another option as they settle on their plan under center.
