The Patriots don’t need top draft prospect Travis Hunter because they have Christian Gonzalez, some have argued.

Gonzalez, though, is open to the possibility.

“It would be cool,” Gonzalez told NESN.com during a video conference from Super Bowl radio row Wednesday. “I mean, as long as he came in and got to work, that’s all you can ask for.”

Holding the fourth overall pick, the Patriots have been linked to Hunter in pre-draft speculation and mock drafts. Hunter’s ability to play wide receiver and/or cornerback make him one of the top talents in the class, and he’s ranked NFL draft expert Daniel Jeremiah’s second-best prospect.

“It would be interesting,” Gonzalez said. “He’d be a great athlete, he’s shown it throughout college. So wherever he goes whether it’s here (New England) or somewhere else, I’m excited to see how NFL teams use him, what side of the ball he plays on. He’s an entertaining person to watch. Excited for him to continue his step into the next level.”

There are pros and cons to the Patriots drafting the Colorado product since it’s unknown which position Hunter intends to play. New England might prefer for Hunter to play wide receiver given the team’s obvious need at the position.

The Patriots don’t have as big of a need at cornerback seeing how Gonzalez, a Second Team All-Pro selection, just concluded his second season and has solidified himself as one of the best in the league.

But that’s not to say Hunter wouldn’t add talent to the locker room — and Gonzalez seems to know it.
