The New England Patriots have already wrapped up a lot of their offseason questions, but one big one still looms as mandatory minicamp gets underway on Tuesday. Star cornerback Christian Gonzalez is due for a massive new contract extension, but the two sides don’t seem close to a deal.
Despite the impasse, Gonzalez was still at the first day of minicamp on Tuesday. While he didn’t participate the whole time, sitting out the 11-on-11 portion of the practice. Once things finished up, he was asked about his contract situation and if he has optimism that a deal can get done, via Mark Daniels of MassLive.

“I hope so,” Gonzalez said. “I mean, it’s between them two, both sides to get it done. Like I said I want to be here, so, that’s what I’m gonna say.”
That doesn’t exactly sound promising, and there isn’t much to indicate that the two sides are very close to a deal at the moment. However, the Patriots would be wise to lock up one of the best young cornerbacks in all of football and it would still be a surprise of they didn’t do so.
Despite waiting on an extension, Gonzalez is present at minicamp when a lot of players would not be. That’s an admirable stance for him to take, but he didn’t have much to say on the matter when asked, via Chad Graff of The Athletic.

“I’ve got obligations. I’m here,” he said.
Gonzalez has a chance to reset the cornerback market this offseason and sign what could be the richest cornerback contract in NFL history. New Los Angles Rams cornerback Trent McDuffie did just that this offseason when he signed a four-year deal worth $124 million.
Whether Gonzalez ends up getting more money than that remains to be seen, and he may not settle for any less than that. Regardless, Patriots fans will be happy that their star defensive back is still around the team while he waits for a new deal.
