Excitement continues to build around TreVeyon Henderson this summer, but the New England Patriots newcomer has ignored the outside praise.
The second-round pick has quickly made a name for himself throughout training camp. Patriots fans and fantasy football drafters are dreaming of the speedy running back’s upside as he keeps earning rave reviews. Henderson has made an instant impact by scoring a 100-yard kick return touchdown and an eight-yard rushing score in New England’s preseason contests.
However, the 22-year-old isn’t letting the hype get to his head. Henderson said Tuesday, per MassLive’s Mark Daniels, that he’s not monitoring the public flattery.
“I don’t really pay attention to all the social media stuff,” Henderson said. “The biggest thing I know, people praise me now because I have this success. But I feel like it doesn’t come from true love. At the same time, people see me as a football player, so if things come crashing down, I know that love turns into hate.”
Unlike many people, Henderson is missing a lot of positivity by steering clear of online chatter.
CBS Sports analyst Jeff Kerr predicted that Henderson will become New England’s first 1,000-yard rusher in 2022. Fox Sports radio host Colin Cowherd called Henderson the “steal of the draft” when saying he has the potential to become a top-five running back.
The former Ohio State star may instantly carve out a significant role in a Patriots backfield that returns Rhamondre Stevenson and Antonio Gibson. Henderson offers big-play upside as a rusher and receiver.
He’ll get one more chance to grow his growing fan club when the Patriots close their preseason against the New York Giants on Thursday night.
“I’m thankful to be in this position,” Henderson said. “Thankful to have had some success so far – and getting my feet wet. Playing in the NFL, it’s a blessing. It’s an amazing opportunity.”
