Headlined by Christian Gonzalez and Carlton Davis, the New England Patriots cornerbacks arguably make up the team’s strongest positional group.

And the Patriots may still look to add to that unit.

The Patriots brought in former Detroit Lions starting cornerback Jerry Jacobs for a workout Wednesday, according to MassLive’s Mark Daniels. The Patriots also worked out Christian Holmes, who played two seasons with the Washington Commanders, per KPRC 2’s Aaron Wilson.

Daniels noted a deal between the Patriots and Jacobs is not imminent.

It’s understandable why the Patriots are interested in Jacobs. The 27-year-old spent three seasons with the Lions and started 29 of the 40 games he played in for the franchise. Jacobs, who stands at 5-foot-11 and 203 pounds, notched 55 tackles and three interceptions in his final season with Detroit in 2023.

Jacobs didn’t play in a single game in the NFL last season after being released by the Los Angeles Rams with an injury settlement in July.

Holmes primarily was a special teamer during his time with the Commanders. Holmes totaled 20 tackles in his career with Washington. Like Jacobs, Holmes didn’t play in the NFL in 2024. He was released by Washington in August, but signed on with the New York Giants later in the month. The Giants then cut Holmes as they got their roster down to 53.

Gonzalez and Davis create a formidable pairing in New England’s secondary and the Patriots can also rely on Marcus Jones in the slot, but aside from that, they don’t have much else.

Alex Austin, who stayed with the Patriots this offseason by signing his exclusive rights tender, has made a good impression the past couple of seasons and will provide solid depth while Isaiah Bolden, Marcellas Dial, D.J. James, Miles Battle, Cobee Minor and Brandon Crossley will all battle for a roster spot.
