A former assistant to Mike Vrabel, Dews most recently worked for the Jets.

Just one day after re-hiring Josh McDaniels as their next offensive coordinator, the New England Patriots have brought in their first position coach on that side of the ball. Tony Dews will come to Foxboro to coach running backs in 2025, according to a report by Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic.

Dews, 51, has not worked with McDaniels before. He does, however, have extensive experience with new Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel: he was an assistant under Vrabel throughout his six-year stint as Tennessee Titans head coach.

Originally joining the Titans in 2018, he worked with a running back group headlined by All-Pro and NFL Offensive Player of the Year Derrick Henry for the first five seasons of his tenure. In 2023, he worked with the Titans.

Dews left Tennessee after Mike Vrabel was fired in January 2024, joining the New York Jets as their running backs coach. Now, the two men will reunite with the Jets’ division rivals.

Before Vrabel brought him to the NFL, Dews coached at the college level for two decades. Coaching all three phases of the game, his stops included Power 5 schools such as Michigan, Pittsburgh, Arizona and West Virginia.

In New England, Dews will fill the position last held by Tyler Embree. Embree was one of several assistant coaches leaving the team after just one year at the job.
