Cam McCormick is finally making a career change, thanks to the New England Patriots.
McCormick, who infamously had nine seasons of college football eligibility that ran out this past season, was hired by the organization as a scouting assistant, per NFL reporter Ari Meirov.
Yes, you read that correctly.
McCormick, 27, has one of the most interesting stories you’ll ever hear from a collegiate athlete, spending the last nine years attending Oregon (2016-2022) and Miami (2023-24). Why? It’s mostly a combination of injuries and freak accidents, as his early career included knee injuries, a bout with rhabdomyolysis, ankle reconstruction, a malfunctioning screw in his leg and — to top it all off — a torn Achilles. McCormick put all of that behind him, though, and ended up completing his final three seasons of eligibility without any major issues — obtaining a bachelor’s degree in journalism and a master’s degree in advertising and brand responsibility along the way.
Isn’t that kind of nuts?
The Patriots will add him to an ever-growing staff of front office and coaching personnel who will bridge the gap between head coach Mike Vrabel and executive vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf. New England has spent the early portion of the summer adding new names to that group, the majority of which are meant to build up its underserved analytics department.
McCormick, who knows college football players better than perhaps anyone at this point, will remain in that space for the time being — finally getting that job everyone has been telling him to get,
