New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye recently praised Indianapolis Colts signal-caller Philip Rivers amid the 44-year-old’s shocking return to the NFL.

Patriots third-string quarterback Tommy DeVito also discussed Rivers’ comeback but wasn’t so sure about the eight-time Pro Bowler’s decision.

“That’s a lot of time to be removed from the game to hop back into it,” DeVito said, according to a report by ESPN’s Mike Reiss. “I get that he knows the offense, but that almost feels like a ‘danger zone’ depending on how much you’ve been working out or training. I’m sure he was training, but then there’s football training. Kudos for him giving it a shot.”

The Colts lost starter Daniel Jones to a torn Achilles in Week 14 and backup Riley Leonard suffered a knee injury as well.

Indianapolis brought Rivers in for a workout on Dec. 8, signed him to its practice squad the following day and the longtime member of the Chargers started the team’s Week 15 loss vs. the Seattle Seahawks.

Rivers, who hadn’t played since the 2020 campaign, finished the game vs. Seattle 18-for-27 with 120 passing yards, one touchdown and one interception.

If the Houston Texans defeat the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday and the Patriots drop their road game against the Baltimore Ravens on “Sunday Night Football,” New England would need the San Francisco 49ers to win vs. the Colts on “Monday Night Football” to clinch a playoff spot.
