The New England Patriots added former New York Giants signal-caller Tommy DeVito to their quarterback room on Wednesday.

DeVito joins starter Drake Maye and backup Joshua Dobbs in the group and has expressed his excitement to be putting on the Patriots uniform.

According to Saad Yousuf of The Athletic, however, New England has one of the worst quarterback situations in the NFL.

Yousuf ranked the league’s 10 worst quarterback rooms on Thursday, placing the Patriots ninth on the list.

“Before we take a look at the 10 worst quarterback situations in the NFL, a couple of housekeeping things to keep in mind about the rankings. This isn’t just about the starter, but the starting quarterback will weigh more heavily than the backup,” the NFL staff writer said. “The starter was weighed against other starters in the league and the backups were weighed against other backups. Teams with rookie starting quarterbacks were not included because the starter still weighs heavily and there is no NFL track record to consider. The Tennessee Titans, with this year’s No. 1 pick Cam Ward, fell into this category, as did Minnesota, even though J.J. McCarthy isn’t technically a rookie.”

The only teams ranked worse than New England are the Miami Dolphins, Las Vegas Raiders, Seattle Seahawks, Pittsburgh Steelers, Cleveland Browns, New York Jets, Indianapolis Colts and New Orleans Saints.

“As a rookie, Maye displayed a lot of the promise that made him the No. 3 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. If he takes the second-year jump the Patriots are hoping for, Maye’s upside could shoot this quarterback depth chart out of the bottom 10,” Yousuf wrote. “But remember, this ranking is not just about the starter and it’s hard to feel too good about what Dobbs brings to the table, if he’s called upon in game action. Dobbs always seems to have things figured out for the first game or so when called upon, but if the Patriots need him for an extended stretch, they’ll be in trouble. The same can be said about DeVito, whom the Patriots claimed off waivers. The spotlight is fun with DeVito, but on the field he’s winless in his last four starts, and two of his three career wins came against bad teams in 2023.”

Maye, Dobbs, DeVito and company open the regular season against the Raiders on Sept. 7.
