The New England Patriots made multiple changes to their wide receiver room on Wednesday.
New England released Kendrick Bourne, who had requested the move, and now Bourne might be snagged by his former team, the San Francisco 49ers.
Per ESPN’s Mike Reiss, the Patriots are also planning to waive second-year wide receiver Javon Baker, whom New England selected with its fourth-round pick in the 2024 NFL draft.
Baker tallied just one reception for the Patriots in 2024, his rookie season.
Soon after the report of Baker’s release surfaced, MassLive’s Mark Daniels reported on a new detail to the ongoing story (hinted at by Reiss). Per Daniels, the Patriots plan to add Baker to their practice squad.
Baker, 23, spent time at both Alabama and Central Florida in college. He won a national championship with the Crimson Tide in 2020 and was a first-team All-Big 12 selection at UCF in 2023.
Here are the six remaining receivers on the Patriots’ roster, following the Baker and Bourne moves:
Stefon Diggs
DeMario Douglas
Kyle Williams
Mack Hollins
Kayshon Boutte
Efton Chism
The Patriots will kick off their regular season with a battle against the Las Vegas Raiders at Gillette Stadium on September 7.
