Ryan Cowden figures to play a very important role in the New England Patriots front office.

And Cowden has a title to match that.

Cowden, who worked with Mike Vrabel on the Tennessee Titans for five seasons, joined the Patriots earlier this month but the title he would be working under wasn’t known until Tuesday. The Patriots revealed in a team-produced video from the Senior Bowl that Cowden is vice president of player personnel, which was his expected title when he reunited with Vrabel after being a senior advisor with the New York Giants.

The title puts him just below executive vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf. But just because Wolf is above Cowden in the front office hierarchy, it doesn’t mean Wolf is calling the shots with Vrabel now at the helm.

Cowden very well could move ahead of Wolf by the time April’s NFL draft wraps up. But for now, Cowden is playing his role and preaching a collaborative — the buzz word down at One Patriot Place — approach this offseason.

“I like to think as the personnel group, the scouts, pro, college, we’re kind of a team, and it’s our locker room,” Cowden said. “And the more you’re around them, the more you understand what that means when he says this, or I know by his voice, his inflection that he’s really fired up about this.”
