When New England Patriots training camp opens at the end of the week, there’s going to be one position group that a lot of eyes are going to be on, and rightfully so. There’s probably not a bigger question mark on the team right now than the offensive line.
The possible outcomes for this group are wildly different, and, depending on who you ask, people either feel a lot better about last year, about the same, or, in some cases, even worse. In this week leading up to camp, I’m going to do a deep dive into each position along the offensive line and let you know whether I think the Patriots improved, and what to expect from the position as a whole. Today is Day 1, and we’re starting at right tackle. Let’s get into it.
2025 starter: Morgan Moses
Projected 2026 starter: Morgan Moses
The Patriots got great play from veteran free agency pickup Morgan Moses last year, and he’s projected to start again for them this year. The problem is that he started 21 games for the Patriots last year and he’s 35 years old. You’ll have to forgive the fans if they’re not confident about the future at this position, because the team obviously has the same concern after they traded up in the first round in April to select Caleb Lomu.
Lomu is going to work as the backup to Moses this year, but all eyes are going to be on them in camp to see if the rookie can take over for the veteran as early as this season. Add in sixth-round draft pick Dametrious Crownover and second-year player Marcus Bryant, and the depth at the position is significantly better than it was last year.
I fully expect Moses to be the starter again this season, but I’m excited to see how the three guys behind him perform in camp. There’s an argument that the position won’t be better, and that, with Moses another year older, it could even be a little worse. I do, however, think it will be in a better spot overall because of the improved and high-upside depth. Adding Lomu and Crownover, and giving Bryant, who looked solid in camp last year, another year to improve, should make Patriots fans feel good about the tackle situation.
