The New England Patriots are sticking with kicker Andy Borregales.

Borregales was anything but the club’s best kicker during training camp, but inexplicably came out on the winning end of his competition with Parker Romo.

Why?

The Patriots didn’t seem keen on cutting their sixth-round pick after his first training camp, and the results have been extremely uneven through two games as the rookie missed two extra-point attempts in a come-from-behind victory over the Miami Dolphins on Sunday.

New England still isn’t wavering, though, trotting him out to hit a career-long attempt to strengthen their lead in the fourth quarter:

“You gotta have a lot of confidence in him, and I do have a lot of confidence,” Vrabel said postgame, per team-provided video. “I didn’t waver. I was going to go for the fourth-and-5 to try and get it there, but when we got backed up I immediately kicked the field goal. I’m happy for Andy, that’s why he’s here. I thought after the first two, he settled down and that’s what we’ll have to have.”

Borregales hasn’t been horrific — making four-of-five field goal attempts from 22, 35, 44 and 53 — but the inability to find consistency through two weeks has been startling for someone who was expected to bring, well… consistency, to the position.

New England also doesn’t have an obvious backup plan, as the man who competed with him this offseason will be kicking for the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday Night Football.

The Patriots’ eggs are in one basket…
