The New England Patriots are currently taking part in mandatory minicamp as they prepare for the upcoming 2026 NFL season. The Patriots are looking to bounce back from last season’s ugly Super Bowl loss to the Seattle Seahawks.

One storyline hovering over the Patriots this offseason is the contract situation of Christian Gonzalez, who is hoping for a long-term extension from the team, which he has not yet received.

Recently, head coach Mike Vrabel spoke on the situation and how it is affecting things at practice.

“Mike Vrabel said that him and Christian Gonzalez are on the same page about the cornerback not participating in competitive 11-on-11 drills. Said they spoke about the situation before minicamp,” reported Mark Daniels of MassLive on X, formerly Twitter.

Indeed, Gonzalez has been at minicamp for the Patriots despite the contract situation and hasn’t shown any signs of threatening to sit out games or anything of a drastic nature.

The Patriots have already exercised Gonzalez’s fifth-year option with the team, but it remains to be seen if the two sides will come to an agreement on something long-term before that kicks in.

Although injuries have been a concern at times, Gonzalez when healthy has already proven himself as one of the top cornerbacks in the game today, playing a huge role in the Patriots’ success on defense last year, which shut down three straight opposing offenses in the playoffs before falling off the rails a bit in the Super Bowl against Seattle.

The Patriots will get an immediate chance to see how much they’ve improved this offseason when they take on the Seahawks once again to open up their season in early September on the road.
