While the New England Patriots picked up one of their biggest wins in recent memory in Week 5’s “Sunday Night Football” against the Buffalo Bills, they also lost running back Antonio Gibson to a scary-looking knee injury.

Gibson was quickly ruled out after suffering his injury while returning a kickoff in the second quarter of the 23-20 victory.

Head coach Mike Vrabel commented on Gibson’s situation on Monday morning but wasn’t able to provide much of an update yet.

“Mike Vrabel, to ‘The Greg Hill Show’ on status of RB Antonio Gibson (knee): ‘Nothing new to add. He’ll go through some tests this morning and we’ll have to see what comes from those,'” ESPN’s Mike Reiss shared on Bluesky. “Didn’t look good Sunday, with Gibson ruled out quickly.”

The 27-year-old has worked as part of the Patriots’ three-man committee in the backfield this season, alongside starter Rhamondre Stevenson and rookie second-round pick TreVeyon Henderson.

Stevenson opened the primetime showdown with his fifth straight start and was mostly splitting snaps with Gibson until the former lost a fumble in the first quarter. It was Stevenson’s third lost fumble this season, all coming in the last three games.

The former fourth-round pick played just eight snaps on Sunday night following the fumble, with six of them coming in New England’s “pony” grouping that has two running backs on the field at the same time, per Reiss’ report.

Henderson and Stevenson shared duties in the backfield following Gibson’s exit. The former finished with six carries for a team-high 24 yards and the latter gained just 14 yards on seven rushing attempts, though scored a pair of touchdowns as well.

Gibson had six carries for 21 yards before his injury while adding two kick returns for 49 yards.

The former third-round pick leads the team in kick returns (12) and kick return yardage (342) this season. Gibson had a 90-yard return for a touchdown during the team’s first win of the campaign in Week 2 over the Miami Dolphins.
