The New England Patriots must strengthen their receiving core if they hope to make a serious push for the playoffs this season.
Since the open market offers few high-quality wide receivers, New England will likely need to pursue a trade to acquire one. Former Patriots cornerback Ty Law recently expressed his desire for the team to trade for Philadelphia Eagles receiver A.J. Brown.
“Absolutely bring him in,” Law said on Tuesday on WEEI’s “The Greg Hill Show” when asked about whether the Patriots should trade for Brown. “If you can get A.J. Brown and pair him with Stefon Diggs, bring him.”
The 28-year-old receiver currently plays a somewhat limited role in Philadelphia’s offense, as he has caught just 19 passes for 194 yards and a single touchdown over his first five games. The Athletic’s Dianna Russini reported that Brown is eager for more targets in the passing game.
“A.J. Brown is frustrated again,” Russini wrote on Saturday. “He’s made that clear, while the other high-paid receiver in Philadelphia, DeVonta Smith, has stayed quiet despite his own frustrations, multiple sources tell me. The wideouts in Philadelphia clearly want more touchdowns. They each have one.”
If Brown is still unhappy with his lack of production by the Nov. 4 NFL trade deadline, the Eagles might decide to move on. The Patriots have enough draft capital and salary cap room to attempt to acquire the three-time Pro Bowler.
