The Patriots chose not to retain Troy Brown, but might have if they knew where he was going to end up.

The Giants announced on Thursday that he’d be joining their staff as an offensive assistant as part of the NFL Minority Coaching Fellowship. ESPN’s Mike Reiss pointed out the addition, noting that New York head coach Brian Daboll coached the former wide receiver during his first run in New England (2002-2006).

Brown, 53, had two very different stints in New England, the first of which ended with enshrinement into the franchise’s Hall of Fame in 2012. Brown was a member of three Super Bowl victories, serving as a do-it-all force on offense, in the kicking game and sometimes on defense.

Bill Belichick brought him back into the fold as a coach in 2020, but it didn’t go well.

Brown held the titles of running backs coach, wide receivers coach, kick returners coach and skill development coach across the last five seasons, eventually being dropped as a new staff was built by former teammate Mike Vrabel. The Giants will try to help him get back on track in his coaching career.
