The Patriots are currently riding a six-game winning streak, and while most things are going smoothly for New England, quarterback Drake Maye has been taking quite a beating.
The Atlanta Falcons and the Cleveland Browns sacked Maye six times in each of the last two games. However, offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels isn’t worried about pass protection.
“I think generally speaking our pass protection has been pretty sound,” McDaniels said on Thursday, via Boston Herald’s Doug Kyed.
Maye appeared to agree with McDaniels, suggesting that the pass protection is performing well because the young quarterback took most of the blame for being sacked.
“A lot of the sacks I have taken have been my fault,” Maye said on Wednesday, via Cleveland.com. “You know I’ve been holding the football.”
Defenses sacked Maye 34 times this season, making him the second most sacked player, just behind Tennessee Titans rookie quarterback Cam Ward, who faced 38 sacks.
Although defenders are sacking Maye at a high rate, New England still manages to win games. However, as the competition improves — especially in the postseason — he will need to start throwing the ball away a bit more.
