During Mike Vrabel’s introductory press conference back in January, the New England Patriots head coach outlined his top three goals for his program: win the AFC East, to host home playoff games, and to compete for championships.
New England has not done No. 1 on that list since 2019 and are coming off back-to-back last place finishes in the AFC East. But with Vrabel now at the helm of a remodeled roster, the Patriots’ odds have found themselves back near the top after NFL cutdown day.
Buffalo Bills (-260)
New England Patriots (+500)
Miami Dolphins (+700)
New York Jets (+1700)
It’s no surprise that reigning NFL MVP Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills open the season as the heavy favorite to retain their crown in the division. Since New England last won the AFC East in 2019, the division has been owned by Buffalo with five straight titles.
But, the Patriots odds imply they will be Buffalo’s biggest threat this season. While question marks still remain following training camp and the preseason along the offensive line and overall depth across the roster, high-level defensive additions in free agency along with an offensive-focused draft and hiring of Mike Vrabel has raised New England’s floor entering the season.
Their odds in the AFC East also have to do with the Miami Dolphins, who has finsihed second in the division in four-of-the-last-five seasons, trending in the wrong direction this offseason. The New York Jets also continue to have a long way to go as they begin a new era led by head coach Aaron Glenn and quarterback Justin Fields.
