As the Patriots were in the midst of their second straight 4-13 season in 2024, trade interest from around the league came in with a focus on some of the team’s young, promising talent. While New England listened to that interest, it made clear at the time that cornerback Christian Gonzalez was not available. Entering the fourth season of what is now his five-year rookie deal — after the Patriots picked up his fifth-year option — Gonzalez is seeking an extension, and it’s expected he’ll get one before the regular season begins.
Gonzalez, the team’s first-round pick out of Oregon in 2023, has done a lot with a little so far in his professional career. Injuries have limited his ability to stay on the field at times. He suffered a dislocated shoulder and torn labrum in Week 4 of his rookie year and needed season-ending surgery, as a result. He’s been a bit more durable since, only missing one game in 2024, but a hamstring injury did hold him out for the first three weeks of his 2025 campaign.
After missing the better part of his rookie season to injury, Gonzalez was forced to really establish himself in Year 2. Luckily, he was able to do so in relatively low pressure as the Patriots proved to be mostly uncompetitive in his sophomore campaign. Finally healthy, he was able to focus on his game and delivered a second-team All-Pro season. When the pressure ramped up last year as the team made a run to the Super Bowl, he showed that he would not shrink in the spotlight and continued to deliver Pro Bowl-caliber play.
While he hasn’t been a turnover machine, with just three interceptions in 34 games, Gonzalez has been reliable as a one of the league’s better cover corners. In his two healthier campaigns, he’s combined for 21 passes defensed, and he ranked as the 14th best cornerback in both seasons, per Pro Football Focus (subscription required). Gonzalez didn’t play enough as a rookie to qualify for PFF’s rankings, but his 80.8 defensive grade in a short sample was higher than both the grades that ranked him at 14, showing consistent performance in each season.
Soon after the Patriots’ season ended on the sport’s largest stage, Gonzalez made it clear he was open to a longer stay in New England. The team made the obvious decision to pick up his fifth-year option as discussions were ongoing, which gives the two sides more security and time to get things done, but it seems Gonzalez has no desire of seeing that option. When Gonzalez skipped Organized Team Activities at the start of the month, it opened up a bit of speculation that he might hold out, but he was in attendance for voluntary practices shortly after and mandatory minicamp after that.
At mandatory minicamp, reporters asked Gonzalez if he intended to play in 2026 without a new contract, and according to ESPN’s Mike Reiss, his response essentially shrugged off the question...
