The New England Patriots have elevated former Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Mark Robinson to the active roster ahead of Sunday’s game at Gillette Stadium.
Robinson, a 2022 seventh-round selection by the Steelers, was released by Pittsburgh on Aug. 25. On Aug. 28, Robinson was signed to the Patriots’ practice squad.
Robinson established himself as a run stopper and became a valuable contributor on special teams. However, in a room with Patrick Queen, Payton Wilson, and now healthy Cole Holcomb, there were maybe one or two spots available in the room.
The Steelers went with rookie Carson Bruener over Robinson. Bruener was not only routinely around the ball on defense, but he is also a special teams contributor.
The former Ole Miss product was selected in the 2022 NFL Draft. He converted from running back to linebacker during his collegiate career. After making a number of plays in the 2022 preseason, he carved out a role.
Robinson appeared in 38 career games, recording four starts, 45 tackles, and three forced fumbles.
Robinson joins former Steelers linebacker Robert Spillane in New England.
Spillane claimed this offseason that the Steelers lied to him during free agency in 2023. Spillane has since earned himself another payday with the New England Patriots, signing a three-year, $33 million contract with New England this offseason.
“Before I went into free agency, [the Steelers] told me, ‘Go out, test the market, see what you get. We’re gonna offer whatever they give you. We wanna make you a Steeler. We love you,’” Spillane said on the Bussin’ With The Boys podcast. “I call them, ‘I got an offer from the Raiders. I want to come back, what’s the deal?’ They were like, ‘Good luck, have fun.’”
The two Patriots linebackers will be looking for revenge on Sunday against their former team.
