New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye is among the very best in the business.
The Ringer’s Steven Ruiz seems to think so, anyway.
Ruiz released an updated version of his quarterback rankings on Thursday, which saw the second-year quarterback make a major jump from his initial ranking of No. 18 in Week 1 to No. 8 in Week 10.
“Maye is a star. While there’s still plenty of room for growth in the 23-year-old QB’s game, there are no real holes in it,” Ruiz wrote. “Any questions about his unorthodox mechanics have been answered, as he’s already established himself as one of the most reliably accurate quarterbacks in the NFL.”
Maye sits behind many of the gunslingers you’d expect — the Baltimore Ravens’ Lamar Jackson (No. 1), Kansas City Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes (No. 2), Buffalo Bills’ Josh Allen (No. 3), Los Angeles Chargers’ Justin Herbert (No. 4), Los Angeles Rams’ Matthew Stafford (No. 5), Dallas Cowboys’ Dak Prescott (No. 6) and Cincinnati Bengals’ Joe Burrow (No. 7).
Maye has never sat higher in the week-to-week rankings, having risen from No. 20 in Week 2 to steadily improve at least one spot every week ever since.
The Patriots have been more than happy with the development of their young g quarterback, who currently ranks first in completion percentage over expectations (+11.5%), fourth in expected points added per dropback (0.295) and fifth in passing yards (2,285).
Maye will have his work cut out for him this weekend against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, as wide receiver Kayshon Boutte, running back Rhamondre Stevenson and offensive lineman Garrett Bradbury all missed the first practice of the week.
If there were ever a time to show that he’s worthy of such a high ranking, it’s Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.
