New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye is well aware that he’ll never live up to Tom Brady. Maye, however, is a gifted QB in his own right, and Pats fans are ready and willing to grow with Maye as the 23-year-old hopefully becomes a perennial Pro Bowler (and perennial winner) in the seasons to come for New England.
There will be ups and downs for Maye along the way, of course, and it’s worth celebrating Maye anytime he achieves something special, especially at this point in his young career.
Sunday’s win over the Miami Dolphins was a big day for Maye, for multiple reasons. Obviously, picking up the first win of the season after a tough Week 1 meant the most to Maye and the Patriots.
But Maye’s individual performance was not without historical relevance.
According to the official X account for the Patriots Communications Department, Maye did something on Sunday that only Brady has done in a Patriots uniform: record at least a 135.0 passer rating, a passing touchdown and a rushing TD in a single game.
It probably won’t be the last time we see Maye do this. Despite the impossibly-high standard that Brady has set for any future QBs in New England, Maye is already far superior to TB12 in one area: his capacity to do damage with his legs.
Maye’s dual-threat ability makes him a special QB and unique weapon for Mike Vrabel and Co.
Will Maye deliver again in Week 3? A second win on the season for the Patriots this Sunday against Aaron Rodgers and the visiting Pittsburgh Steelers would be massive.
