Brady is one of two candidates interviewing for the Patriots’ offensive coordinator position so far.

The New England Patriots have started their search for their next offensive coordinator. Among the first candidates to interview for the open position was Marcus Brady, currently the passing game coordinator for the Los Angeles Chargers.

What do the Patriots see in Brady, though? And what would he bring to the table as their next OC? Let’s take a closer look at him to answer those questions.

What is Marcus Brady’s experience?

Playing experience: A 43-game starter at Cal State Northridge in Los Angeles, Brady finished his career as the most prolific quarterback the school’s now-defunct program would ever see. Despite his success, however, he received little interest from the NFL when coming out in 2022. Instead, he went to Canada to continue his playing career.

Spending time with the Toronto Argonauts, Hamilton Tiger-Cats and Montreal Alouettes as a backup quarterback and part-time punter, he started a combined 11 games in seven CFL seasons. Along the way, he completed 246 of his 469 pass attempts (52.5%) for 3,321 yards, 15 touchdowns and 16 interceptions, and also added 679 rushing yards and six TDs. He averaged 39.2 yards on his five career punts.

Coaching experience: Brady stayed in Montreal following his retirement in 2009, and was hired as the team’s wide receivers coach by head coach Marc Trestman. After winning the Grey Cup in each of his first two seasons, he was promoted to offensive coordinator for the 2012 campaign.

After Trestman left to become head coach of the Chicago Bears in 2013, Brady re-joined the Argonauts as offensive coordinator under Scott Milanovich; Milanovich and Brady had previously both coached under Trestman. He spent five years in Toronto, winning another Grey Cup after Trestman was hired as the team’s new head coach in 2017.

In 2018, Brady joined the Colts as assistant quarterbacks coach and later quarterbacks coach under Frank Reich and offensive coordinator Nick Sirianni. After three seasons at the job — which saw him, among others, work closely with current New England QB Jacoby Brissett — he was promoted to OC following Sirianni’s departure to the Eagles.

He spent one-and-a-half seasons in that position, including a 2021 campaign that saw Indianapolis rank a respectable ninth in points per game (26.5), 10th in points per drive (2.39) and 13th in expected points added per play (0.060). However, those numbers declined sharply in 2022: when he was fired in November, the 3-4-1 Colts had averaged only 16.1 points per game and were ranked 29th in the NFL with a -0.101 EPA.

Three weeks after his firing, Brady teamed up with Sirianni in Philadelphia. He finished the 2022 season as a consultant, and in...
