While New England was celebrating the Patriots’ 28-16 divisional playoff win over the Houston Texans, news about one of the team’s assistant coaches were reported.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, tight ends coach/passing game coordinator Thomas Brown is expected to interview for the Los Angeles Chargers’ vacant offensive coordinator position. Coincidentally, the job became available in large part due to L.A. scoring only three points in a wild card loss to the Patriots.

For Brown, 39, this is the second interview opportunity this hiring cycle. Previously, the Arizona Cardinals requested to interview him for their head coaching job.

A former NFL running back who was selected by the Falcons in the sixth round of the 2008 draft, Brown worked for the Rams, Panthers and Bears between 2020 and 2024. The Super Bowl LVI champion served as offensive coordinator in both Carolina and Chicago, and briefly as Bears interim head coach after the firing of HC Matt Eberflus in 2024.

Last offseason, new Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel hired Brown to work alongside offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels. Since then, he has contributed to New England fielding one of the most effective passing attacks in the NFL, while also helping tight end Hunter Henry to the most productive season of his career.

Per NFL rules, Brown is not allowed to interview with the Chargers until after the AFC Championship Game. The earliest possible date for an interview is Jan. 26, after the Patriots’ game conference title game in Denver.
