The New England Patriots cut their roster down to 53 players on Tuesday, but the work for the team didn’t stop there. With hundreds of players hitting waivers, the Patriots scoured the open market, while also keeping an eye on the guys they wanted to add to their practice squad.
After initially keeping eight wide receivers on their 53-man roster, the Patriots quickly made a change at that spot, opting to release Kendrick Bourne and Javon Baker after they claimed quarterback Tommy Devito and cornerback Charles Woods off of waivers.
Beyond that, the team also worked on filling out their practice squad, bringing back a handful of players they cut that did not get claimed on waivers. On Wednesday night, New England revealed the players who will make up its 16-man practice squad to start the season.
There are a couple of names that stick out right off the bat. 2025 fifth-round pick Bradyn Swinson was one of the more surprising cuts for the Pats, but the gamble paid off, as the team was able to bring him back on its practice squad.
Miles Battle and Kobee Minor were also both competing for a spot on the backend of the depth chart at cornerback. While they didn’t make the roster, both guys landed on the practice squad, providing some extra depth in the secondary for New England.
Of course, it’s also worth remembering that this group is subject to change. After getting released on Wednesday, Baker is a candidate for a practice squad spot if he ends up clearing waivers, which would result in one of these guys getting released.
Even with roster cuts being made, the Pats are still tinkering with their roster before Week 1 rolls around. While their practice squad is currently full, it wouldn’t necessarily be a surprise to see a couple more roster moves get made over the coming days.
