Marcus Jones is in the middle of the best season of his career, and now he’s being rewarded for it.
The Patriots on Tuesday announced they’d agreed to a new contract extension with Jones, who was scheduled to hit free agency next offseason. Multiple insiders, including NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport and the Boston Herald’s Doug Kyed, later reported the deal is for three years and will keep the first-year captain in New England through the 2028 campaign. Salary figures weren’t known at the time of this writing.
Shortly after news of the contract broke, Jones used his X account to react with a prayer emoji.
A third-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, Jones has taken his game to a higher level this season.
In the first eight games, the Houston product posted 36 tackles, two interceptions, nine pass breakups and one sack while playing 76% of defensive snaps. Jones, who earned First-Team All-Pro honors as a punt returner in 2022, also leads the NFL with 21.6 average punt return yards, including one touchdown.
A triple-threat weapon, Jones occasionally played on offense in 2022 and 2024 but has focused on defense and special teams this season. He currently owns the 17th-best coverage grade on Pro Football Focus and has emerged as one of the best slot cornerbacks in the NFL.
This story will be updated once the full details of Jones’ contract have been reported.
