The New England Patriots traded for AJ Brown less than a week ago, and he’s already making a Randy Moss impression. The NFL’s worst-kept secret finally broke on Monday when Brown was traded from Philadelphia to Foxborough. In his introductory press conference, he reminded the Patriots faithful and ESPN’s Mike Reiss of Moss before the historic 2007 season.
“‘The Moss of old is back,’ he said, his voice trailing off to end the call before reporters expected,” Reiss reported. “It was trademark Moss flair. Fast-forward 19 years to Tuesday in the New Balance Athletics Center media workroom. Brown had just concluded his first Patriots practice and was near the end of a news conference when asked how much he believes he has left in the tank. ‘How much?’ he said, tapping both hands on the dais in front of him and flashing a smile. ‘You’ll see.’ He then walked off in a drop-the-mic type of moment.”
The Patriots traded for Moss before the 2007 season, which saw them go 16-0 in the regular season. While that team lost in the Super Bowl, it was still one of the greatest seasons a receiver has ever had. Moss was 30 at the time and led the league with 23 touchdowns. The 1,493 yards he posted that year landed second among his season totals in his 14-year career.
Brown had a down year with the Eagles last year, barely cracking 1,000 yards in the regular season. After managing only three catches in their playoff loss to the San Francisco 49ers, Brown was shipped out of town. Now, he heads to New England with a great young quarterback and a desire for the 7th Super Bowl in franchise history.
Brown will be 29 in Week 1, is coming off a down year, but is completely confident in his abilities. That sounds like Moss and a marriage that worked well for the Patriots.
