Former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick will have to wait to get into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
ESPN’s Don Van Natta Jr. and Seth Wickersham reported on Tuesday that Belichick will not be a first-ballot Hall of Famer. Belichick fell short of the 40 out of 50 votes needed for induction to the Pro Football Hall of Fame during his first year of eligibility, the outlet reported.
Belichick was “puzzled” and “disappointed” by his inability to secure support from at least 80% of Hall committee members, ESPN reported.
Following the stunning news, Kansas City Chiefs star quarterback Patrick Mahomes took to X to blast the decision.
“Insane… don’t even understand how this could be possible,” Mahomes wrote about Belichick not getting into the Hall of Fame.
It’s a fair comment from Mahomes, as many thought Belichick would be a first-ballot Hall of Famer. Mahomes also went up against Belichick four times in the regular season, going 3-1, but is 0-1 in his lone playoff appearance.
Belichick is considered one of the greatest coaches in NFL history. He led the Patriots to six Super Bowls and won another two as defensive coordinator with the New York Giants.
Belichick is 302-165-0 all-time as an NFL head coach and 266-121-0 as the head coach of the Patriots.
