At one point in his coaching career, Tommy Tuberville was considered among the best college football coaches in the country. Tuberville led Auburn to an undefeated season in 2004 before things began to go off the rails. Tuberville eventually ended up at Texas Tech, where he claims to have helped land superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
There’s just one problem. Tuberville was long gone by the time Texas Tech began recruiting Mahomes after three mediocre seasons that resulted in a 20-17 combined record. When Mahomes did eventually commit, Kliff Kingsbury was the head coach of the Red Raiders.
As a coach, you start recruiting and working with players years before they get to college.

“Well, I never even coached him. What happened is I recruited him and then I left and went to another school, but I got to be very good friends with him,” Tuberville said on the Megyn Kelly Show. He’s not just a good athlete, he’s a very good example for a lot of our young youth across this country.
The lie detector determined that that was a lie.
“He did not recruit me at the time. I don’t remember if I ever got to meet him or not,” Mahomes said when asked about Tuberville’s comments.
Tuberville and Mahomes’ comments came after Donald Trump stated that he had a conversation with Tuberville about coaching Mahomes, even though he never actually did so.
“Tommy Tuberville, a great coach,” Trump said. “You know, his quarterback was named Mahomes, he was a great college coach. And I said, how good was he? He said, ‘you don’t want to know how good.'”
Mahomes, a 3-star recruit, threw for 11,252 yards, 93 touchdowns and 29 interceptions in three seasons for the Red Raiders.
