Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes doesn’t seem keen on adding Olympic gold to his repertoire.
Flag football will debut at the Olympics in the 2028 Summer games in Los Angeles, California. And last week, the NFL voted to allow players to try out for flag football at the upcoming games.
Fans and analysts have already started drawing up their dream lineups for Team USA’s flag football team. Obviously, any ideal lineup would feature Patrick Mahomes, who’s established himself as the best quarterback in football.
But Mahomes has already made it clear that he has no intention of trying out for the flag football team, per Henry McKenna of Fox Sports.
“I’ll probably leave that to the younger guys,” Mahomes said. “I’ll be a little older by the time that comes around.”
Indeed, Patrick Mahomes will be on the cusp of his 33rd birthday when the 2028 Summer Olympics roll around. Professional athletes usually lose several steps once they reach their 30s so Mahomes and other dual-threat QBs like Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson and Kyler Murray may not be the ideal QB options for Team USA by then.

And though there’s obviously little chance of injury in flag football, some players will surely choose to avoid the risk altogether and focus on getting themselves ready for the 2028 NFL season.
Mahomes and the Chiefs lost their once-in-a-lifetime chance to complete a three-peat when the Philadelphia Eagles blew them out 40-22 in Super Bowl 59. Their path to redemption will begin against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sept. 5, when they play the Los Angeles Chargers at Arena Corinthians in São Paulo, Brazil.
The 29-year-old Mahomes has historically owned the Chargers in his playing career, having not lost to them since Week 3 of the 2021 season.
