Reid and Mahomes discuss Kansas City’s mentality heading into their matchup against the Eagles for Super Bowl LIX.
The Kansas City Chiefs are on the brink of something historic as they prepare to face the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX. A win next Sunday would secure a rare championship three-peat, making Kansas City the first team in NFL history to win three straight Super Bowls in the Super Bowl era.
Despite the implications, head coach Andy Reid keeps his team locked in on the day-to-day process rather than the historic milestone.
“I think the only time I’ve heard (Andy Reid) say [three-peat] is to the media whenever you all ask him about it,” said quarterback Patrick Mahomes. “He’s very locked in on just, ‘How can we be great with our cadence today at practice?’ so that’s just the stuff that Coach Reid focuses on.”
Mahomes shares that same mindset. The three-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback has built a reputation for delivering in the postseason, boasting an impeccable 17-3 playoff record—the second-highest among quarterbacks in NFL history. His ability to elevate his game when it matters most has been a defining trait of his career, and according to Reid, that focus has remained unwavering throughout this playoff run.
“He’s (Patrick Mahomes) been good with that,” Reid said of Mahomes’ ability to stay locked in. “I’d say that’s been a consistency. You can really see as the season builds up, he’s even more and more focused. Then you get to this time of the year, and he’s really locked in.”
In the lead-up to the Super Bowl, Mahomes has been mentioned in the same breath as NBA legends Michael Jordan, the late Kobe Bryant, and MLB great Derek Jeter. These names are synonymous with winning and represent the most recent athletes to achieve a three-peat in the four major sports. While joining them in that elite company would be a monumental accomplishment, Mahomes remains focused on winning this championship simply for the sake of his teammates.
“I think you always want to leave a legacy and make your imprint on history, but more than anything, you just want to accomplish a goal that you have with your teammates,” Mahomes said. “When you start [training camp] in St. Joe, your goal is to win the Super Bowl. We know it’s a hard process, we know it’s a hard week in and week out, but I’m proud of how our guys have went about that process. We know it’s not going to be easy, this team we’re playing is a really good football team, but we’re going to go out there and put our best effort out there and play as a team. Hopefully, that’s enough to get a win.”
However, Mahomes acknowledged that he has learned a lot from the past greats, specifically Jordan and Bryant, and is trying to adopt their winning mentality.
“I think more than anything is you see the competitors that they are (Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan),” Mahomes...
