Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs were once again the subject of much controversy on Sunday when it appeared that officials were making numerous calls that went in their favor, whether they should have or not. However, there was one play in which the referees actually swallowed their whistles and NFL fans still got riled up.

With around 12 minutes left in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s AFC divisional game, Patrick Mahomes tried to recreate a move that he has been successful with before – a move that angered NFL fans all over the country. No, it wasn’t a late slide that drew a phantom targeting penalty. That was called in his favor in the third quarter. This time it was Mahomes deliberately slowing down as he ran out of bounds, knowing full well that a Texans defender would push him, then he would flop. Which he did.

Miraculously, the officials didn’t throw a flag, even though it was as much an offense as when Will Anderson bumped into Mahomes earlier in the game and was called for roughing the passer. Perhaps this time it was just too egregious.

“I would say the only one I felt like I probably did too much was the one on the sideline where I didn’t get the flag,” Patrick Mahomes said on The Drive on 96.5 The Fan this week. “The ref saw it and didn’t throw a flag, I understood it immediately and know that I probably shouldn’t have done that.

“But at the same time, the one everyone is talking about where I fell down, I was just trying to get out of the way from getting smoked by the defensive lineman running. So, I’ll try to keep doing that and not take those hits, because that’s a smart way to stay in the football game.”

Earlier in the interview, Mahomes addressed all of the complaints fans have each week about the Chiefs getting favorable calls from the officials.

“I’ve kind of learned that no matter what happens during the game, something is going to come out about (the officials) if you win, if you continue to win. I don’t really pay attention to it,” Mahomes said. “Obviously, I’ve been on both sides of it as far as how I’ve felt that calls were made. But at the end of the day, those guys are doing their best to make the best calls and keep it to where the players are making the plays in the game and that’s what decides the outcome.

“Obviously, there were calls here and there that people didn’t agree with, but at the same time I think there were a lot of other plays that really decided the outcome of that football game.”
