Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Pat Freiermuth is not concerned about the current state of the wide receiver room.
PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers are entering another offseason with an underwhelming wide receiver room after trading George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys. Tight end Pat Freiermuth doesn’t seem to be as concerned as most, though.
“I’m not really thinking about it too much,” Freiermuth said. “If it’s more of a role for me, then great. I’m fully capable of picking up that role, but if we add another guy, great. Obviously, it’s a long way from camp, a long way from the season. We’ll see whatever people end up coming or whatever. But I’m excited about the guys we have right now.”
The Steelers are adding a few new faces to the group after trading for DK Metcalf and signing Robert Woods in free agency this offseason. They are also getting former third-round pick Roman Wilson back into the fold after he missed most of his rookie year due to injuries.
That’s exactly why general manager Omar Khan dismissed the idea that Pittsburgh is in the same spot it was in a year ago.
“We wouldn’t have done this if we didn’t feel good about the receiver situation, about our depth here,” Khan said. “I know people make comparison to last year, but it’s not even close to being the same.”
As Freiermuth mentioned, he could also be in line for his biggest role yet, coming off a career-high 65 receptions for 653 yards and seven touchdowns in 2024.
The 26-year-old signed a four-year, $48.4 million contract extension with the Steelers last offseason and could prove to be worth that payday and then some with a big showing in 2025.
Pittsburgh could opt to add another playmaker via trade or the open market, too. Khan didn’t shut down either option.
“If there’s an opportunity to add a playmaker on offense, regardless if it’s a receiver, we’ll look into it,” he said. “If it makes sense, it makes sense.”
Either way, the Steelers arsenal of weapons will look different from a season ago. The question is: Will they produce better results?
