Behind the Steel Curtain
The Pittsburgh Steelers’ season came to an end Monday night in a 30-6 loss to the Houston Texans in the wild card round, marking the seventh consecutive playoff loss for Pittsburgh, and the fifth straight playoff loss by double digits.
The game also ended what was a rough season for tight end Pat Freiermuth. The former second-round pick posted career lows in catches and yards for a full season (41, 486), and he appeared in just 51 percent of offensive snaps, 11 percent lower than his previous career low, which came back in his rookie season.
On locker room cleanout day, Freiermuth spoke to the media and admitted frustration over his role in the offense.
“I would say that I am disappointed with the lack of opportunities I was given,” Freiermuth said via Chris Adamski. “But, at the end of the day, I’m a team player. I was proud of myself for not making it about myself. It’s always about the team and what we can do to win. I feel like I could have been in situations where I could help the team win.”
Freiermuth signed a four-year extension with the Steelers in September of 2024. Perhaps with the changes coming in terms of a new head coach, and very likely a new offense, Freiermuth can see his production and opportunities increase in 2026.
